What to do if you find a stray dog

There are many people who find a stray dog and really just don’t know what to do. Sometimes they may think that if the dog has strayed from their home that the owner must have not cared enough to take care of the dog but that is not always the truth. If you have found a stray dog, there are some things that you really should do.

The first thing that you should do is to make sure that you and the dog are safe. Watch for any signs of aggression before you decide to catch the dog. Call animal control. If the dog is in traffic, be careful. Don’t go out in the road until you make sure there are no cars that might endanger you or the dog. If you already have caught the dog, take it to an animal shelter. If you can’t do that immediately, then give it a safe, temporary home. If the dog has tags, contact the owner right away. If there are no tags and you cannot take it to a shelter, you can make up posters and online ads. In the meantime, you will want to take care of the dog as best you can. A veterinarian clinic will have the ability to see if the dog is chipped. This is a micro chip that some owners have had inserted into their dog’s neck which gives the owner’s name and contact information.

What you really need to do is think of what you would want someone to do if they found your lost dog?
